Painting Skin Colour In Watercolour

The art of accurating skin tone is a tricky task and requires good skill set and good practise. It does not matter if you are a beginner or a practised professional Picture to painting instapainting, trying to paint close to real and characteristically toned skin tone can be quite a overwhelming. It is not just a matter of taking the paint out of the tube and throwing the colours on the canvas.

In this article we will guide you on how to paint lifelike skin tone in watercolour. You could experiment with it a couple of times roughly before making the actual painting. You have to measure the ratio of the different colours before mixing them. But the best part of painting skin tone is that it does not require a lot of materials and can be done by all kinds of artists - beginners as well as professionals alike. With a little effort and some practise, you will ace at it in no time!

One thing that you need to ensure before you start mixing and painting is what tone do you actually want. You could refer to a photo or an image online or a live model - analyse the subject closely. View closely if the tone is dark or light or medium and the undertone colours to it. When you will observe well, you will realise that there will be shades of green and blue to the skin colour as well. Acute observations like this will help you in understanding and deciding upon the colours you will need to create the base for the skin tone.

2 Tips To Keep In Mind When You Mix Skin Tones In Watercolour
● When you apply watercolour on paper, the colour will look a little dark but once it dries the colour will slightly lighten.
● If you have tried painting skin tone before, make notes of the colours you used in it so that the task becomes a little easy the next time you do it.

3 Steps To Keep In Mind When You Mix Skin Tones In Watercolour
● Take a small dot of blue paint, a little bit of yellow paint and some red paint. This will be your basic colours for creating light skin tone. If the skin tone is medium, add brown paint to it. If it is a dark skin tone, add slightly more brow paint compared to the amount used for medium skin tone. Ensure that you refer to the reference photo when you mix the colour to make sure that the colours don’t become messy.
● Before you apply the paint on your actual surface, test it out on a rough paper to see for yourself how it will look. The mix might not be perfect but it is good to start with. You can later on refine the colours as you like when you add layers to it. See for yourself if the colours have become too dark or too light. If you feel it is slightly more dark, add some water to the mix. And if it is too light, you could mix some brown paint to the mix.
● As we mentioned before, skin colours have shades of red, green and blue to them in the undertone. You could a little of the said colours depending on the reference picture to make it look as real as possible. You can continue to refine the colours until you are satisfied with the results.

Once the base of the skin tone is created you can add shades to it for the adjoining areas such as your cheeks. To create red cheeks, all you need to do is add some red to the skin tone mix and you are good to go.
