3.98 not working
VWBUG - 6-23-2005 at 07:22 AM

Just installed the v3.98 upgrade and it freezes at the loading screen, no progress bar. Is anyone else getting this?

How do I fix it?

Pirk - 6-23-2005 at 12:15 PM

Same here... :(

VWBUG - 6-23-2005 at 12:17 PM

No Ejukebox! I don't think that it can cope!!! Save my Sanity!!

Pirk - 6-23-2005 at 12:31 PM

I'm trying to install 3.98 (the full version) in a different folder, and that seems to work: eJ is building a new database!

VWBUG - 6-23-2005 at 12:40 PM

Does that not mean you will need to get a new serial number though? as it will be a 30 day trail you will end up with.

Pirk - 6-23-2005 at 12:51 PM

Well, still no good... :(
eJ builds its database, but it doesn't run better after: Don't risk your serial number! (even if it's safe, the serial is preserved since you don't format your hard drive)

VWBUG - 6-23-2005 at 01:14 PM

The reason I was saying was that when I first downloaded the beta 3.98 i installed in a different folder to 3.97, but when I ran it I got the message saying that in was not registered and the trial had expired. it was only when I installed it over v3.97 that it recognised that it was a registered version.

Pirk - 6-23-2005 at 01:26 PM

Ah ok...
Personally I have several versions of eJ installed on different folders and I never experience any problem with my registration. But I would not advise anybody to do like me...

NB: 3.98Beta was just the main .exe file (ejukebox.exe). You just need to past this beta file in your existing folder. Just rename the last exe file before... (in case you want to return to 3.98)

VWBUG - 6-23-2005 at 01:42 PM

I just replace the older file with the new one so I have no way back at the moment, just need to wait on the fix I suppose!

Getting withdrawal symptoms at the moment though, actually having to do some work for a change, rather than playing about with EJ.:(

Pirk - 6-23-2005 at 01:53 PM

Ok :(
Me I can still run an old version... but I'm too impatient to play with this new version! :D

Well, don't work to hard in the meantime! ;)

VWBUG - 6-23-2005 at 01:58 PM

It seems a bit strange that nobody else is posting about having a problem with it. Surely we are'nt the only ones who have attempted to install it yet. At least with the beta you could see how many people downloaded it.

Pirk - 6-23-2005 at 02:08 PM

I think many people don't have passed yet... The upgrade is very recent. But if ever someone tells that works for him! :o

I wait for Audiosoft visit... :D

Blaze - 6-23-2005 at 04:19 PM

Same here...and I kinda need it now!!! Having a party and that's no good without the music
Anybody got the old 3.97 lying around?

Pirk - 6-23-2005 at 04:27 PM

I still have the 3.98 BETA version. :) So I think you can replace the new "exe" with this one in the eJukebox folder. That works for me! ;)

Pirk - 6-23-2005 at 04:46 PM

Is it good now Blaze??

Pirk - 6-23-2005 at 05:11 PM

...waiting for an official correction! ;)

Pirk - 6-23-2005 at 05:16 PM

Well it seems the setup file is too big for the forum. The upload has failed... Sorry :(

Audiosoft - 6-23-2005 at 06:06 PM

Wonder why its not working for you guys?
Pirk with v3.98 can you try editing ejukebox.ini and under [DefaultSkin] change it to ....
Update=3.98

Then see if it will startup.

If that doesn't work... make sure that winamp.exe is not frozen and/or try loading winamp first then v3.98 and see if it will startup.

Here is the v3.97 upgrade and full installer if anyone needs to go back to the old version until we figure this out:

http://www.audiosoft.neteJukebox_v3.97_Upgrade.exe
http://www.audiosoft.neteJukebox_v3.97_Setup.exe

Pirk - 6-23-2005 at 06:16 PM

Well OK, thanks Audiosoft, but it's still no good. I only have the splash screen and nothing else.

Audiosoft - 6-23-2005 at 06:21 PM

OK did the [DefaultSkin] Update=3.97 or was it 3.98 already when you went to edit it?

Also what skin were you guys using?

Pirk - 6-23-2005 at 06:28 PM

Re: If that doesn't work... make sure that winamp.exe is not frozen and/or try loading winamp first then v3.98 and see if it will startup

Even with Winamp loaded first (and playing music) eJukebox doesn't start. The "eJukebox.exe" process use 0% of the CPU time: it seems to do nothing but it is not completly frozen: If i close eJ using the task manager the splash screen close normaly with a fade-out effect.

Pirk - 6-23-2005 at 06:32 PM

Re: OK did the [DefaultSkin] Update=3.97 or was it 3.98 already when you went to edit it?

That was 3.97

Pirk - 6-23-2005 at 06:39 PM

Re: Here try replacing the new v3.98 ejukebox.exe over the old ejukebox.exe...maybe there was a problem with the installer?

No no, still "halted" on the splash screen. Bizarre!?

Pirk - 6-23-2005 at 06:58 PM

Re: Also what skin were you guys using?

Before that I upgrade to 3.98 I used a modified version of the Silvertunes skin.

I've also tried to install eJ 3.98 in a different folder:
The first time I get the "database creation" dialogue, eJ build a new database... then when it has finished the database creation: nothing more happens, nothing is displayed: eJukebox is like a ghost!

Audiosoft - 6-23-2005 at 07:02 PM

Is the splash screen frozen or animating? How much CPU is ejukebox.exe using when it stuck on the splash screen...can you move the splash screen window? Try pressing the Enter key when the splash screen gets stuck...maybe there is a message box hidden behind the splash screen. Make sure Norton or your other firewall/antivirus program isn't blocking scripts in the new eJukebox.exe

Also, you can change that [DefaultSkin]
Update=3.98 back to 3.97 - that way the new default skin will get installed correctly the first time you successfully load v3.98.

Pirk - 6-23-2005 at 07:11 PM

Re: Is the splash screen frozen or animating?
animating

How much CPU is ejukebox.exe using when it stuck on the splash screen?
It uses nothing: 00

And I can drag the splash screen.

Audiosoft - 6-23-2005 at 07:19 PM

Ok...and you don't see the scrollbar at all right? not even the outline of it?

Here is a new ejukebox.exe v3.98 build - try replacing it over the old ejukebox.exe...thanks

Pirk - 6-23-2005 at 07:27 PM

Re: Ok...and you don't see the scrollbar at all right? not even the outline of it?

Yes, I don't see the scrollbar and none outline of it. No trace!

Pirk - 6-23-2005 at 07:28 PM

Re: Here is a new ejukebox.exe v3.98 build - try replacing it over the old ejukebox.exe...thanks

Thank You, but still nothing more than before...

Audiosoft - 6-23-2005 at 08:06 PM

This is frustrating...can't find anything that has changed since the beta which could cause this problem...and i know a bunch of people have upgraded to v3.98 without this problem. But I'll keep looking...

Pirk - 6-23-2005 at 08:18 PM

Ok thanks a lot for your prompt support Audiosoft.

I also suspect that could be a "regional setting" problem. It seems the new version works good for your compatriots. I'm curious to see if that will be good or not for our friend Fishy!!

Audiosoft - 6-23-2005 at 08:23 PM

OK you know the drill...replace over the old ejukebox.exe

This version should popup messageboxes as it starts to load the main interface to tell us where it is getting stuck...if you don't see any message boxes it is not loading the main interface at all...so let me know if you get any message boxes....and if you do what the last one says

Pirk - 6-23-2005 at 08:25 PM

Hey guys! I have 5 stars now!

All that with my atrocious "French English"... :D
Excuse me, but I love eJukebox! :P

Audiosoft - 6-23-2005 at 08:38 PM

:o Wow! You broke 1000 posts! Very impressive...Thanks for all your help and inspiration Pirk! Keep it up! :D

Pirk - 6-23-2005 at 08:39 PM

Well... I would prefer to say that I see something more Audiosoft, but ouch! no, I still only see the splash screen.

Thanks.

Audiosoft - 6-23-2005 at 08:40 PM

Ok thanks...well atleast now i know the problem is occuring before the main interface is told to load.

VWBUG - 6-23-2005 at 08:47 PM

Don't know if this has anything to do with it but I may have installed 3.98 while ejukebox was still working in the background after closing it?

Audiosoft - 6-23-2005 at 08:47 PM

Ok one more time to track where the problem starts in the code. You will get some message boxes this time...let me know what the last one says

Audiosoft - 6-23-2005 at 08:49 PM

RE: Don't know if this has anything to do with it but I may have installed 3.98 while ejukebox was still working in the background after closing it?

Yeah that probally would cause a problem. You may want to try rebooting windows and installing the v3.98 upgrade again

VWBUG - 6-23-2005 at 08:54 PM

Test progress 6 is the last one

Audiosoft - 6-23-2005 at 08:58 PM

hmmm....must not be able to find winamp:
try killing winamp.exe from the taskmanager....start winamp manually....then start eJukebox

if that doesn't work make sure the right path to winamp is in ejukebox.ini

[Winamp]
Dir=C:PROGRA~1Winamp

VWBUG - 6-23-2005 at 09:01 PM

No, same as before. I have also restarted and reinstalled the upgrade. Same thing.

Pirk - 6-23-2005 at 09:02 PM

test progress 6, me too...

VWBUG - 6-23-2005 at 09:03 PM

When you say kill winamp in the task manager, are you under the impression that it starts when trying to load Ej, because it does'nt when I try it.

Audiosoft - 6-23-2005 at 09:08 PM

RE: When you say kill winamp in the task manager, are you under the impression that it starts when trying to load Ej, because it does'nt when I try it.

It should...this is where the problem might be...
Start winamp first (and have it play a song) and keep it running and then start ejukebox and see what happens.

What version of winamp do you guys have installed?

Pirk - 6-23-2005 at 09:14 PM

I have Winamp 5.092

VWBUG - 6-23-2005 at 09:38 PM

I am running v 5.08d

VWBUG - 6-23-2005 at 09:44 PM

have played a few songs in winamp before starting EJ. ......................................................................................... .......................Same thing.

Audiosoft - 6-23-2005 at 09:48 PM

Ok guys hopefully this fixes it...i just updated the code to make the verification of winamp.exe's existance more reliable.

VWBUG - 6-23-2005 at 09:56 PM

Same as before, Sorry!

VWBUG - 6-23-2005 at 10:01 PM

Tried opening winamp first, same again, now trying letting winamp play for a bit first.

No same thing.

Audiosoft - 6-23-2005 at 10:04 PM

hmm...you saved the attached ejukebox.exe over the old ejukebox.exe in your eJukebox folder before running it right?

VWBUG - 6-23-2005 at 10:05 PM

Yes I did

Pirk - 6-23-2005 at 10:10 PM

Still no good! Unfortunately, it seems we are deadlocked...

VWBUG - 6-23-2005 at 10:16 PM

Oh well, only got 975 posts left before I've caught up with you now.:D

Make that 974

Audiosoft - 6-23-2005 at 10:31 PM

Try pressing the Enter key on your keyboard a couple of times right after the splash screen comes up.

Pirk - 6-23-2005 at 10:31 PM

VWBUG, Yeah you are on the right way! ;)
You could try to post in French if that can stimulates you more... :D

Pirk - 6-23-2005 at 10:37 PM

pressing enter... That's cold Audiosoft!

VWBUG - 6-23-2005 at 10:40 PM

pressing enter does nothing!

la pression entrent ne fait rien

Pirk - 6-23-2005 at 10:44 PM

Good! Almost perfect VWBUG:

Appuyer sur entrée ne fait rien! ;)

Audiosoft - 6-23-2005 at 10:46 PM

Here is another ejukebox.exe with some changes...

If that doesn't work try installing this: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=7b9ba261-7a9c-43e7-9117-f673077ffb3c&displaylang=en

VWBUG - 6-23-2005 at 10:50 PM

Unfortunately I cheated and used an online translator. My french is limited to second year of high school level. I opted for physical education instead of a language. Wish I could change that decision now mind you. It is only recently that Scottish schools have made a language compulsary until year four of high school.

It is embarassing that my country expected others to learn english to communicate with us.

Pirk - 6-23-2005 at 10:55 PM

The install prog ask me where I want to place the extracted files... well, I don't know!?

VWBUG - 6-23-2005 at 10:59 PM

Instructions on the site say that you save them in the same directory as the download.

Audiosoft - 6-23-2005 at 10:59 PM

Pirk it doesn't matter - just extract it to the desktop - it is just one file that it extracts - then you need to run that to automatically install the runtimes

VWBUG - 6-23-2005 at 11:01 PM

doesn't seem to make any difference

Pirk - 6-23-2005 at 11:11 PM

OK Audiosoft... of course, sorry I'm a bit tired!

VWBUG, French language is not so established than English, so I think you can continue your sport! ;)

Otherwise, I can't see any improvement since the runtime upgrade. Is it obligatory to restart my computer, Audiosoft?

VWBUG - 6-23-2005 at 11:13 PM

I restarted, made no difference.

Audiosoft - 6-23-2005 at 11:16 PM

Ok...the runtimes was a long shot.

So...I take it the latest ejukebox.exe attachment didn't fix it yet either?

VWBUG - 6-23-2005 at 11:27 PM

Sorry audiosoft, didn't notice the other attachment, trying ot now, still on dial up so waiting for it to download......slowly.:(

Pirk - 6-23-2005 at 11:27 PM

Well good luck guys, I really must go to sleep now... :o

Thanks!

VWBUG - 6-23-2005 at 11:28 PM

incidently, no it didn't work.

VWBUG - 6-23-2005 at 11:30 PM

Getting tired also, but will give it another go before I say goodnight, as I won't be able to try again until Monday.

It's 00:32 here.

Pirk - 6-23-2005 at 11:31 PM

and yes, it's still stucked!

Tomorrow afternoon and at night I could test again... ;)

It's 1:36 here! :o I'm dead!! Good bye... :)

VWBUG - 6-23-2005 at 11:40 PM

yeah good night Pirk

Audiosoft - 6-23-2005 at 11:40 PM

Well thanks for all your help guys. I'm gonna have to call it a night here too... we will have to pick this up again sometime over the weekend or on Monday.

VWBUG - 6-23-2005 at 11:43 PM

Thanks for trying Audiosoft. I'll try it again on Monday. Or maybe I'll have a look again in the morning.:D

Demnos - 6-24-2005 at 06:03 AM

Hey guys, are you having all the fun without me? Can't let you do that ;)

Count me in: I Installed eJukebox 3.98 this morning and get the same thing as you!!! :(

Even though I am in Germany, my PC is running pure US Version W2K, zero localization (all regional options set to US). The problem must be somewhere else.

Well, hope you don't fee so alone now.

VWBUG - 6-24-2005 at 06:43 AM

Thanks demnos, it seems like it is going to be a difficult one to solve, as you can see from last nights posts.:(

Demnos - 6-24-2005 at 07:12 AM

Interesting observation:

When I start the 3.98 Full Installer (not the update) AND install into a fresh directory, the First-Time-Database builder initiates. Right after that is done adding my MP3 files, I get a message box:

Run Time Error 339: Component comctl32.ocx or one of its dependencies not correctly registered or file is missing.

I did install the VB6 RUNTIME Update as Audiosoft recommended but I get the same message!

After the above, there is no way to get the same error message again, i.e. just starting eJukebox or overwriting the EXE files will not bring up the message, the program just sits there on the initial flash screen. But when you repeat the procedure and do a full install to yet another new empty directory, the error happens again!

Maybe this can help Audiosoft to pinpoint the problem?

schonne - 6-24-2005 at 08:01 AM

I just downloaded the official 3.98 and getting the same problem as you guys!

I'm in California, so I don't think this has anything to do with physical location.

-----------------------------------------

Woe is me....must have ejukebox...bring back e..juke........box..........ughhh!

Demnos - 6-24-2005 at 08:12 AM

Could one of you try to see if you get the same error message as me when installing the 3.98 Full Install into a brandnew directory?

VWBUG - 6-24-2005 at 09:22 AM

Sorry, at work at the moment and don't have EJ here.

Pirk - 6-24-2005 at 11:59 AM

Hi Demnos :)

So well... welcome to the club! :D

I've tried a new "first" install:
Yes you are right, I also have the same error message than you just after the first database build... And eJ terminates itself after that.

Fishy - 6-24-2005 at 02:14 PM

Demnos: I also got this when doing a clean install at a laptop.

Demnos - 6-24-2005 at 02:35 PM

Great, at least it is not just me. ;)

I have a feeling that this error message may really help Audiosoft to find the problem. Let's hope he has time to look into this soon. Maybe it is simple thing such as a missing file or a wrong registry entry...

Fishy - 6-24-2005 at 02:59 PM

hmm yes. But it's still weird that it functions for someone at all then. Sure hope that audiosoft figures this out.

uh oh... It seems I've got the same thing, splash scren only, not progress bar.... the real odditiy, ther isn't even any CPU time on EJ

Pirk - 6-24-2005 at 03:56 PM

I've succeeded in running eJukebox 3.98! :)

It's easy! lol
...with the help of Demnos and a certain "Google":

I've just put the "comctl32.ocx" right!
Yes Demnos, the bug was explained in your error message... :D

You can fix the problem for you guys following these instructions:
http://www.ascentive.com/support/new/support_dll.phtml?dllname=COMCTL32.OCX

I've used the first solution, but I think the alternate method which only copy and register the comctl32.ocx file should be sufficient.

Thank you very much for your judicious remark Demnos! ;)

NB: Personnally I think that night I've missed this error message box just because I was not in front of my PC just as the clean database building was done... And to think that was one of my first tests with this bug...

But finally it's a happy end!!

Allrighty then ! cool, and I'm back up and running 3.98 too. It actually seemed to speed up my entire system just a bit.

Pirk - 6-24-2005 at 04:41 PM

Great Jojo! I'm happy for you ;)

Fishy - 6-24-2005 at 05:00 PM

Very nice detective work Pirk! :D

Demnos - 6-24-2005 at 07:00 PM

Now that is what I call teamwork!!! I actually had googled for this as well but what I found didn't really raise my hopes of fixing the problem. Your persistence paid off! Thanks, Pirk!

Pirk - 6-24-2005 at 07:16 PM

Ah well you are right Demnos, the team really exists! We are the Audiosoft Team! :D
But we would be nothing without our great team manager Audiosoft!

Audiosoft - 6-25-2005 at 12:25 AM

Nice work guys!...saved me allot of headache :D
Turns out this problem orginates in the addition of the new webbrowser status bar within eJukebox which uses comctl32.ocx. Now I just have to add comctl32.ocx to the installer and have it register the file.

schonne - 6-25-2005 at 04:55 AM

I applied the patch and now I'm rocking and rolling too!

Great teamwork!

Audiosoft - 6-25-2005 at 09:19 PM

Just updated the full install and upgrade downloads to correct this problem. Hopefully that fixes it for good. Thanks again guys. :D

If you ran into this problem and haven't fixed it manually already - downloading the new upgrade file should fix it. Let me know if it does not.

Also, you may have noticed the setup downloads are getting kinda large now... it will be nice after v4.0 when i can make the upgrades under 1MB and require v4.0 be installed before any later upgrades can be used.

Pirk - 6-25-2005 at 10:03 PM

Audiosoft, I can report that eJukebox 3.98 still...

...works! :D after the official update. But as I haved already fixed the problem manually...

Thanks. ;)

Blaze - 6-26-2005 at 12:22 AM

Working here aswell.
By the way, thanks for the help earlier Pirk, you saved the party :)

Pirk - 6-26-2005 at 07:48 AM

Ahh, phew!

A French who save a Danish party! Astonishing what internet can cause... :D

;)

Montana - 6-26-2005 at 10:31 PM

If you use the download from the official download from Microsoft, which is HERE , then save it to your desktop, then run it, Windows auto installs it and then you have to re-boot.
This is the way I got rid of this problem, and is a LOT simpler than using Pirks link(sorry Pirk, but I like a nice simple solution as I am not a very computer literate person).
It worked first time and I have had no problems since.

Andy

Audiosoft - 6-27-2005 at 12:24 AM

The v3.98 Upgrade installer should fix this problem now...so you can re-download and re-install v3.98 - (you might have to restart your computer) and it should fix the startup problem. If anyone is having this problem 'right now' please give the new official upgrade download a shot instead of the .ocx download and let me know if it fixes it. I would really appreciate some feedback on if the new v3.98 Upgrade download file fixes the problem.

Demnos - 6-27-2005 at 12:39 PM

Dear Audiosoft,

I hadn't actually installed Pirk's fix yet. Just downloaded the newest 3.98 upgrade and can confirm that it resolves the problem even on machines that didn't do a manual update yet.

Audiosoft - 6-27-2005 at 06:38 PM

Thanks Demnos

VWBUG - 6-28-2005 at 01:26 PM

Just installed the upgrade again and it works now. What is with the new balloon that appears when you edit the genre etc. It just stays there after it has completed the task and I need to keep moving it out of the way to view different parts of the screen? The increase to 1000 newest songs is excellent, helps me greatly.

Audiosoft - 6-28-2005 at 07:45 PM

Thanks :D Totally forgot to get rid of those status ballons when they didn't turn out how i wanted. They will be gone in the next release.
