MP4 Support
bhauxwell - 4-1-2004 at 05:04 PM

As supprt grows for MP4 will eJUkebox be providing support for this foramt?

Winamp 5 plays it ok and allows editing of tags etc. so your basic engine is already compatible.

I'm considering moving to MP4 but would prefer to stay with eJukebox if possible.

You mean .m4a and .aac files? I'm already pissed off enough that my portable player won't handle them...

Yes I believe so, I mean the MPEG-4 Structured Audio (MP4 Structured Audio) see http://sound.media.mit.edu/mpeg4/ for one of many Google hits. I use ahead Nero Wave editor for transfering my Vinyls to .MP3 and noticed that Release 6 also supports for free the new MP4 format. (You need an additional licence to support MP3). Their write up on http://www.nero.com/en/info_he-aac.html got me interested enough to produce a file and try it in the various players I have. Winamp is fine, RealOne plays but doesn't add to the library (strange behaviour) and ejukebox just ignores the files.

MP4 seems to have advantages for the future. and I would rather have one future proof set of audio files. As Winamp supports this, can't be that much of a change (editor ?) to bring this in.

I've been seeing an increasing amount of ".m4a" extensions on files sitting out there. More each week.

Audiosoft should pick up on Krobar's suggestion on letting the users add in the .ini file which formats eJ should include in its database while building. That way those who try out the new formats can give feedback to this fourm if they work or not (some formats use standard id3tags, such as MPC, and therefore slip in without a problem).

eJukebox v3.8 will automatically import: MP3 WMA APE OGG MPC MP4 AAC
- the last 2 are new

Right now the only extension that eJukebox writes tag data to is MP3 files. We will add support for other tags as formats become more popular.

Audiosoft,

Why dont you just let users add their own file extensions in the ini file?

You could have one setting for readable formats and another for id3 writeable formats. The default settings in the ini file could be updated by yourselves with each new version and that would allow for users who dont know how or dont want to edit the ini file.

Is .m4a, .mp4 or either extension being assumed? The way I've always heard it, .aac and .m4a are sub-formats of MP4, but .mp4 itself isn't usually used as a file extension. Then again, just to be "safe", maybe it should be... in addition to .m4a and .aac I mean.

Winamp seems to recognize/associate with all three--.aac, .m4a AND .mp4

v3.8 looks for .m4a and .aac

jhlurie - 5-2-2004 at 04:26 PM

Well, since I've never actually SEEN a file named .mp4--except for one I renamed as a test myself--I guess that's okay--.m4a is the big one (I've rarely even seen .aac actually used). ;) Still, Winamp themselves did have the foresight to associate .mp4, so maybe they were just covering their bases.

Thanks for the quick reply.

i have all my cds as .aac (2177 files and growing). I love aac. GOOD SOUND!
Im so disappointed that eJukebox canīt arrange the songs according to the cds and tracks.
eJukebox adds them but canīt "use" them!
Iīm still on my trail period and wonīt by the program until it can "use" .aac id.
SO HURRY!! 26 days and counting!

!!!GREAT PROGRAM ANYWAY!!!

FLAC is not supported as claimed because you dont support the .flac file ending! Could you add .wv for wave pack too.

I have a lot of MP4 songs that I would like to use with eJukebox, some from iTunes as .m4a, some from Nero as .mp4

Full MP4 support seems not to be around today:
1) Files with .mp4 are not included by eJukebox
2) Files with .m4a are included and can be found under "Artists" but are not included in "Album" view

I hope that these two issues will be resolved in the next version of eJukebox

Cheers.
