ID3 Tags Still Altered?
sidartha - 3-18-2006 at 04:16 PM

I remember a while back that EJ was modifying ID3 tags with "play counts" or "popularity info" or something similar.

Is this still the case or has this been removed?

When an mp3 is intentionally picked in eJukebox it updates a tiny hidden field in the id3 tag with the pick count. This allows you to have eJukebox autoplay songs based on popularity and not have to worry about manually giving each song a star rating. Having it in the tag saves this data so it can automatically be restored after moving or renaming your mp3 files.

eJukebox does not automatically change any of the standard mp3 tag fields or effect the song data in any way. It just adds a very tiny bit (much less than 1KB) of its own data to an id3v2 compliant field that only eJukebox can see... just like other players such as musicmatch do. The difference is - eJukebox actually uses the additional data for something worthwhile via popularity autoplay mode and the Home button listing. It allows you to see and keep track of the popularity of songs and use that data for automatic track selection.

If you want to set the number of times picked for each song back to 0 you can always click the "Reset All Popularity Stats" on the Home button listing. Doing that will not effect manual Star Ratings.

Does the popularity & rating feature still not work with lossless files that use tags other than ID3 (FLAC, APE, WAV, etc.?) In the case of FLAC, it seems that eJ could perform a similar function whereby it creates a tag according to the FLAC/Vorbis spec.

Thanks,
